Cheesy Animal Crackers

This is a very forgiving recipe.  Even if the dough is rolled out a bit too thick, or they’re a touch over cooked, or you use a different type of cheese because that’s what you have on hand, they’ll still turn out delicious.  And still be a ton of fun to make.

Children can easily work with small batches of dough at a time.

We used the pointy end of a chopstick to make marks for eyes.

Cheesy Animal Crackers

½ cup butter, softened
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
1 cup all purpose flour
½ cup whole wheat flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp garlic powder

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. In medium bowl, combine butter and cheese with an electric mixer. Mix together until well blended. Add flour, salt, and garlic powder. Mix until well blended.

3. In small batches, roll out on lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to make shapes, and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with a little salt, if desired.  Bake for 10-13 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.
